Hello, we are Steve and Erika and we thank you for taking a few moments to learn about us. We hope that what we share here might help you as you find your way through this difficult decision.
We have been together for 11 years, married for almost 6, and we have a son, Oz, who is 4. We are both very active parents and share equally in the raising of our son. We have learned a lot from him about how to be good parents—not only the patience and strength that it takes to raise a child, but also the joy of introducing someone to the beauty this world has to offer (and we’ve also learned how to change a diaper just about anywhere!).
After complications from our first pregnancy, and struggles with secondary infertility, we are excited to grow our family through adoption. We will give nothing but love and support to any child that enters this family.
We live in a beautiful college town in the mountains of Virginia in a diverse neighborhood full of children. We hang out with our neighbors at the pool and playground down the block from our house. In town, we have many close friends who are like family, and we also have loving families we see often.
We have told our loved ones about our plans to adopt and they are all extremely excited. We have also reached out to numerous friends who have adopted children, and we’re grateful to have them to support us in this journey. We want you to know that we would welcome having an open relationship with you, or maintaining contact in any way you choose. Even if we never meet you, you will always be spoken of with nothing but respect and fondness, and your child will know that you love them.
We both work for the local university—Erika is a poet and a professor of creative writing and Steve teaches economics and advises students. Our jobs allow us very flexible daytime schedules, long vacations, and summers off. Education is very important to us and we are lucky to live in a community that values it as well. Oz is constantly learning things and we are always happy to support his interests (which currently include deep sea creatures, volcanoes, and bugs) and activities (lately, break-dancing, playing the drums, making collages, and collecting rocks from the yard). We also love music and art, and we take Oz to dance performances, plays, museums, poetry readings, concerts, and puppet shows. We often open our home to visiting writers and artists and musicians. We can’t wait to share our passions with another child.
