Becoming a foster parent

How do I become a foster parent?

The first step is to fill out an application (Roanoke application) and send it to the office closest to where you live. Once we receive your application, someone from our agency will call you to talk further about foster parenting and may schedule a personal interview with you. During a personal interview you can learn about our program and determine if it's a good fit for you and your family; and, we can learn about you and your background and skills. If we determine that we're a good fit for each other, you'll be invited to begin the home study process.

What is involved in a home study?

During a home study we will conduct three personal interviews with you, one of which will be done in your home. We will do an extensive background check on everyone who lives in your home. We will check your criminal history and check to see if you've ever had a complaint of child abuse against you. We also look into your financial situation, verify employment and check your personal references. We will get a report from the Department of Motor Vehicles on all the drivers in your family, because there will be many times when you will need to transport foster children. You will be asked alot of questions designed to find out as much as we can about the experiences you've had in your life. The more we know about you, the more closely we can match you to a foster child that you are comfortable working with.

Is there training and support for foster parents?

Yes, we provide a 30-hour training class which is offered several times a year, and we provide ongoing in-service programs on topics of interest to foster famillies. Our staff of skilled professional social workers is in contact with foster families on a weekly basis and is on call 24 hours a day. We also offer frequent opportunities for you to get together with other foster parents for social activities and to learn from each other.
